about

BILL & BOB, FORGING THE HORN displays the duo's full-bodied rock prowess at it's greatest. Over fifteen years in the vault, a performance captured on July 17th 1996 - from a now long-forgotten club in downtown Tokyo - can finally be heard in its raw glory. The years may not have been kind to the tapes but this "rough around the edges" sound simply adds to the mystique that is Pippen & Heart.

Condemned to rock 'n' roll history, the period 1991-1996 can now safely be classed as Bill & Bob's glory years. After releasing two seminal albums (in the shape of 'Price To Pay' and 'Coming Clean') they found themselves on the road solidly from January '94 through January '97 - inbetwixt recording 'The Forgotten Band'. At the time of this particular recording fans were attending the rather cumbersome "A Concert For Bosnia Celebratory Tour"; what it lacked in the title department however was certainly redeemed by content.

For the unassuming listener back in the nineties, the evolving set was a chance to hear an array of seemingly new material - this would prove to be no less than "Holy Grail material" for the fan; now moreso than ever! By 1996, the duo were playing over two hours of material a night, built up predominantly of material recorded for then-unreleased 'A Negative Loss' ('84-'86, finally released 2008) and the Unknown album ('82-'83), which itself had suffered from promotional issues. Listening now it's clear confidence oozes throughout, showing no fear of leaving an audience behind or resorting to more well known material.

In comparison with 'Live From Timbuktu' (rec.1995, rel.2000) - criticised for its reliance on post-production overdubs - it's fair to say LIVE IN TOKYO 1996 is the most accurate surviving portrayal of the true Bill & Bob live sound. Highlights include a selection of tracks previously unheard live, the radically different 'Fire Up Girl' (aided by the fifteen years since its original recording), a rendition of 'Sheep Alert' six years before its release (on the album of same name) here under the working title 'Tribute' and an appropriate finale: 'Forge's Horn', Pippen & Heart's final recording to be released (in 2011) - for differing reasons, both then and now, a 'new' track.
